Following a series of recent incidents involving Council Member Phil Wong’s district office and staff, including the alleged assaults of a member of his team while performing official duties, vandalism targeting his office, and additional vandalism recently discovered inside the building, Council Speaker Julie Menin vowed increased security measures will be taken to protect the public servants.
Police from the 104th Precinct responded to a 911 call of criminal mischief at 58-38 69th Street in Maspeth just after 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 6, after staff members found shattered windows on the second floor of the district office when they arrived at work.

Additionally, a report for aggravated harassment is on file after officers were informed that an unknown person called the location numerous times from a blocked number, police said. After one of the calls was answered, a male caller reportedly said words to the effect of, “Take control of your tenants, that Council office, or more windows will be broken.” Detectives from the 104th Precinct arrived later that day to canvas the area and continue the investigation.

Speaker Julie Menin visited on July 8 in a show of support for her colleague and his staff. She also met with community leaders and toured the office to view the damage firsthand.
“I wish I could say I was happy to be here today. It is absurd, ridiculous, unconscionable, unacceptable that we have to be here today,” Menin said afterward. “Violence is never the answer; these kinds of threats and intimidation are never the answer, and we will simply not tolerate this kind of behavior.”
Wong was grateful for the support from Menin, civic leaders, and former Council Member Robert Holden, who noted she is the first council speaker to visit the district in a half decade.

“Over the last week, my office has experienced a series of deeply disturbing incidents that are now under investigation by the NYPD and other appropriate authorities,” Wong said. “I want to be careful not to speculate or get ahead of the facts. What I will say is this: violence, intimidation, threats, and vandalism have absolutely no place in our democracy.”
Wong also thanked the countless constituents who have reached out to check on the injured member of his staff. The vandalism occurred just days after two separate incidents involving representatives of the contractor working at the proposed NineDot battery energy storage facility at 64-30 69th Place. On July 2, staff member Bernard Chow was allegedly shoved while documenting construction activity along a public sidewalk. The next day, Chow was allegedly tackled to the ground, striking his head on the pavement. He was admitted to the hospital, where medical staff directed that he remain overnight for observation, and he continues to undergo follow-up medical treatment.

“I know it comes with the job,” Wong said. “Robert Holden warned me already, [that] this comes [with the job], that I get harassed, I get yelled at, I get threatened. The security in the building will be enhanced, and then we will be putting up surveillance equipment.”
Menin added that City Council security will look into the situation and make sure the distinct office and staff are protected.
“Council Member Wong and his staff are public servants. They are here each and every day to serve the public, and they do an outstanding job at doing that,” Menin said. “The idea that someone is doing this, as we saw behind us, is completely unacceptable; it’s uncalled for, and we’re not going to stand for it. So, to make it clear, we’re going to make sure that Council Member Wong and his office and the constituents in this district have a safe haven they deserve.”
There have been no arrests and the investigations remain ongoing, according to the NYPD.
